Chapter Fourteen

After walking Thor to daycare, and receiving assurances from Zoe that she always had room for Thor and that Trevor would be dropping his German shepherd, Brandy, off to play with him in a few hours, Gia started back down Main Street at a brisk pace. She tried Cole’s number, to no avail, then shoved the phone back into the pocket of her leggings.

As she passed the shop that would have housed Rusty’s new deli, the one he’d planned to use to put her out of business, she slowed. With a quick look around to be sure she wouldn’t be observed and become the talk of the town, Gia peered inside the darkened interior. Even using her hand to shield the glare of the sun, she couldn’t make out anything more than shapes and shadows, none of them human, inside the building. Frustrated, she gave up and tried Cole’s number again. Straight to voicemail. Either he’d turned the phone off or he’d ghosted her. Either way, it was obvious he didn’t want to be bothered. That being the case, she gave up and dialed Cybil’s number, then cringed when she remembered how early it was but didn’t hang up.

“Hello, Gia.” At least it didn’t sound like she’d just been awakened by the phone.

“Hi, Cybil. I’m so sorry to bother you this early.”

“Don’t worry about it, I was just heading out to walk Caesar.”

“Do you think that’s a good idea with a killer on the loose?” Gia had never liked the idea of Cybil wandering the woods alone, but Cybil had insisted she’d been doing so for most of her life and wasn’t about to give up the habit. While Gia had felt better about it once Cybil had adopted Caesar, now that someone had been murdered in the forest, she wished Cybil would stick close to home.

Cybil sighed, and Gia had no doubt she knew exactly where Gia’s thoughts had strayed, an uncanny ability that had made Gia think the woman was psychic the first time they’d met. “We’re just walking in the neighborhood for now.”

“That’s probably a good idea. At least until Hunt figures out who killed Rusty.” As far as segues went, it was about as good as she was going to get. “Speaking of . . .”

Cybil chuckled softly. “I figured that’s why you were calling so early. Just give me a minute to get out.”

“Sure.” Gia held on, listening to the sound of muffled voices followed by a loud bang before Cybil returned.

“Okay, sorry, I just wanted to get outside so we could talk privately.”

“Privately? Who’s there?” Since Cybil lived alone . . .

“He’s here, Gia,” she said softly.

“Cole? What’s he doi . . . oh . . . uh . . .” Talk about dense. Heat flared in her cheeks. “I’m so sorry, Cybil. I didn’t mean to intrude.”

“Don’t worry about it, and it’s not what you think.” Gia could practically hear her grin. “Although it might be some of that too.”

Ah, man. She did not need to know that.
